The Animals Of Antarctica

How well do you think this work has gone?
I think that our group did our presentation really well because we completed everything before time and even had time to practise what we were saying.

What was the best section of your work?
I think learning about how the animals stay alive during the coldest season was the best because I learnt the most things in that section.

Where did you go wrong in completing this assignment?
The presentation wasn't that bright or colorful and was a bit boring.

How might you improve your outcome in the future?
Add a bit more information and some more colors to it.

What did you find interesting about the topic you completed your presentation?
Finding out what all the different animals eat and how they stay alive.

What did you struggle with during this assessment?
Not having everyone here on presentation day.

Discovery (Making a volcano)

Volcanoes

Aim: In passion project 2018 I joined the group discovery. I want to find out how to make a volcano and what causes a volcano to erupt.

What have I been working on? I have been working on building a paper mache volcano. I decided to build a volcano because I thought it would be interesting to learn and to build.

Method on building the volcano:
  1. Get a cardboard base.
  2. Place a plastic bottle (lid off) in the middle of the base (tape the bottle down).
  3. Add balls of newspaper around the bottle to make a volcano shape.
  4. Mix 1 part water and 1 part glue to make your paper mache solution.
  5. Once the paper balls are down, paper mache the balls to make a smoother coverage (don't paper mache the top, you want the lid to be able to screw on)
  6. Layer the paper mache up to make sure its sturdy.
  7. Once dried and hardened you can start painting the volcano.
  8. Paint the lid and drill a small hole in the middle of the lid.
  9. Screw the lid back on the volcano.
Method on making the volcano erupt:
  1. In a beaker measure out 35ml of hydrogen peroxide (this will depend on the size of your bottle, ours was 500ml)
  2. Tip the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle and add a squirt of dish soap (add food dye if you want to change the colour)
  3. In another beaker measure out 30ml of potassium permanganate.
  4. When you tip the potassium into the bottle, step back and watch the eruption.
What have I enjoyed about Discovery?
Being able to try something I have never tried before and because it was really fun.

Passion Projects 2018 (Discovery)

Logbook!

12/11/2018 Monday Day 1

Aim: I want to come up with ideas of what to make in my passion project.

What have I completed: Today I found some ideas on what I wanted to make.
I asked lots of people on their different ideas and came up with my own.
I have found my idea of making a volcano. I also found out all the equipment I needed.
My challenges today we're talking to lots of different people because it was awkward and I got nervous.
Next time I will start on my plan.

15/11/2018 Thursday Day 2

Aim: I want to research and find different ways to erupt a volcano.

What have I completed: Today I completed my entire plan on what I will be making.
I have found all the equipment I need and have made the method of making a volcano.
I choose to make a volcano because I found it really interesting and I thought it would be fun to make it
erupt. My challenges today we're finding out how much product I was going to need.
Another challenge was that my group kept finishing earlier then we needed.
Next time I will start building my project.

19/11/2018 Monday Day 3

Aim: Today I want to start making the volcano.
I want to start the base of the volcano and attach the bottle to the base.
We would also like to start shaping it.

What have I completed: Today we completed the structure of our volcano and paper mache it.
We started working out our ratio for the elephant toothpaste and came up with a good one.
20ml Potassium Permanganate, 25ml hydrogen peroxide and a squirt dish soap.
We did fail a couple of times while working on the elephant toothpaste but solved what had happened.
One of the times we have the wrong potassium permanganate.
We have 0.02 potassium permanganate instead of 0.2.
Next time we will start painting our volcano and then we will be ready to erupt it.

22/11/2018 Thursday Day 4

Aim: Today I want to start painting the volcano and try to finish the painting.
If we finish painting then we might add some details to it to make it look more realistic.

What have I completed: Today we completed the painting and adding details to our volcano.
We also got to do one more elephant toothpaste experiment and it worked really well!
We struggled with the painting because we couldn’t get the right brown and we kept making less paint then we needed so it looked a bit funky. We finally came up with the right brown and looks a lot better
then it did. We printed out some photos of dinosaurs and stuck them to our volcano.
Next time we want to start researching more information on why volcanoes erupt and what makes
them erupt and start getting our cardboard presentation ready.

26/11/18 Monday Day 5

Aim: Today I want to research on why volcanoes erupt and make a poster on the information we have
found out about volcanoes.

What have I completed: Today I completed the writing for the poster our group is making.
We come up with lots of group ideas and laid them out into a style that we liked.
I think we struggled with finding the information to the ideas but once we did it worked out really well.
Next time we are hoping to read over what we have written and fix any mistakes and then start
setting out the layout on some cardboard.

29/11/18 Thursday Day 6

Aim: Today I want to finish writing out our presentation and print it off.
I want to put it all together so that my group is already by monday next week.

What have I completed? Today I completed the rest of the presentation and did some chores for the
teachers because everything my group had is now finished. Also finished my science test and
now we are ready for next week. This project has been fun to make and I would do it again.

I wonder... (12)

I wonder why the only male in the world to have babies is a seahorse?

This is because...
The female seahorse plants their eggs inside the male's pouch. The males pouch can regulate temperature, blood flow, and water salinity for the eggs as they hatch so the babies are prepared for life living in the ocean. The females don't have a pouch so therefore its impossible for them to carry the babies.
There are also different males that carry the babies such as the pipefish and the leafy seadragon.

I wonder... (11)

I wonder...
What is the meaning of life?
Well, I think the meaning of life is to live but since we can't live we have kids so they can carry our generation on and experience what its like to be alive.

There is no real answer to the meaning of life its just what you believe.

Home Economics Summary

In term 3 we learnt that for measuring dry ingredients you use a measuring cup and for wet ingredients, you use a measuring jug.

For making food labels you need to add an expiration date, where it was made, amount of food, the name of product, ingredients list, a nutrition label, health star rating, etc...

If there is anything in the products that people may be allergic to make sure that it is listed.

You always need a nutrition label.

When sometimes working as a team it can be frustrating because some of the group members don't participate but some do and the ones that do are really helpful.

Food Allergies + Food Label

Food Allergies

Celiacs disease:
A person with celiacs disease waits an average 6 to 11 years before being correctly diagnosed.
Celiac was discovered in the first century (A.D)
Celiacs disease can lead to other diseases, such as infertility and some cancers.

Lactose intolerance:
Babies can have lactose intolerance as well as others.
Lactose intolerance is able to be cured.
75 percent of the world's population is most likely going to have lactose intolerance.

Allergy to found groups such as seafood, eggs and nuts:
The worst symptom is breathing difficulties or collapsing.
seafood and iodine allergies are unrelated.
Food allergies don't normally run in families.

If people don't make labels relevant for people who suffer from these allergies/diseases they could die, have serious problems, get very sick, or get even more diseases.

My food label I made with Explore Food UK

Whare Tapa Wha Reflection

My Groups Whare:

Physical: Physical well-being is about being safe, sheltered and in good health and it is closely connected to mental well-being

Social: Social well-being is the relationships we have, and how we interact with others. Being social can help us during some difficult times.

Mental: Mental health is being able to cope with stress, is able to be productive and fruitful, and can make a contribution to his-her community.

Spiritual: Being able to experience the purpose and meaning of a person's life and connect with yourself, others, art, music, nature or a power greater than oneself.
It was challenging when...
I thought it was challenging when there were multiple different answers to one question.

I coped with this challenge by...
I tried finding the best fitting answer.

I worked well with others because...
I worked well with my group because we could understand what everyone was doing and we could help each other if we needed help.

I contributed by...
My job was to find the definition of spiritual wellbeing and to help my teammates understand what spiritual well-being meant. I also found out the definition for Whare Tapa Wha which means the four cornerstones of Maori health.

What Happens To Food?

Ingestion:
  • When food enters your mouth its called ingesting food.
  • Chewing food is called Mastication.
  • Swallow food.
  • The teeth that you chew food with is called a molar.
  • The teeth that you rip and tear food with is called canines.
  • The teeth that you cut food with is called the incisors.
  • Our Salivary glands add saliva to the food to help lubricate it.

Digestion:

Stomach:

The esophagus leads to the stomach.
The stomach can hold 2-4 litres of fluid.
It holds acid which digests food.
The stomach is a large elastic bag that can expand to hold many litres of food.
The PH of the acid is 1-2
The interior of the stomach is lined with holes called gastric pits.

Small Intestine:

The small intestine lies between the stomach and the large intestine.
The PH is between 7-9.
Absorption of nutrients takes place in the small intestine.
The inner walls are covered in small, finger-like projections called villi.
The projections increase the surface area of the small intestine, which increases the rate of absorption.

Large Intestine:

Reabsorption of ions and water is a vital function of the large intestine.
The inner surfaces do not contain villi.

Liver:

The liver is the second largest organ in the human body.
A green coloured fluid called bile is produced in the liver.
Average mass of the human liver is about 1.5kg.
The liver detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
The liver makes proteins important for blood plasma and other functions.

Traditional Tales From Around The World

Why Is The Sea Salty:

Why Is The Sea Salty
Finished Painting

Why do I think the author created this story?
I think the author created this story to explain how the sea is salty but in an easier way to tell children and help them use there imagination.

What is the purpose of this story?
The purpose of the story is to explain why the sea looks or acts the way it is and why it's salty.

What did you learn about this story?
That the magic millstone wouldn't stop spinning at the bottom of the sea and kept pouring out the finest white salt.

The reason why I chose to paint was that I really like paintings and I thought it would be nice to express what I have learnt through painting the story.

My Painting is a book cover for the story Why Is The Sea Salty!

Hercules:

Why do I think the author created this story?
To tell others the story about Hercules.

What is the purpose of this story?
To retell the story about Hercules.

What did you learn about this story?
I learnt the story of Hercules life, and how he changed his life from being bad to good

The reason why I chose to do a slideshow was because I wanted to retell the story.

Maori Tattooing

Moko (Maori Tattooing)

Moko is the name of Maori tattooing which is something the Maori men would do when they wanted to get tattoos for different meanings.
The moko's were normally curvy lines with patterns, never crossed the center of the face.
One of the moko designs can go on the left side of the face which is generally the father's ancestry and the right side is for the mother's ancestry.
I think that I would not want to get a Moko only because it would hurt and I don't really want scars on my face.

My Ta moko is in the place where the woman get tattooed because I am a female.
My Ta moko means family.

I Wonder (Part 10)

I wonder...
What is the smallest animal in the world?
The smallest animal in the world at the moment is a bumblebee bat.
The bumblebee bat is also known as Kitti's hog-nosed bat and is about 29-33mm in length and 2g in mass. They can live up to 5 to 10 years and they are an endangered bat.
They are found in Thailand and Southeast Burma and normally live in limestone caves along rivers.
They feed on different insects. They are called Bumblebee Bat because the size is similar to a bumblebee. They were first discovered by Thai biologist, Kitti Thonglongya in 1973.

Health/Mindful

What did I learn?
I learnt that mindfulness is connecting with another and interacting with the person.

Was there anything you felt difficult?
I didn't really find anything difficult. It was easy for me to learn what mindfulness is.

When talking to a classmate how did you know what they were feeling?
By showing different facial expressions, by the energy they have, how they would talk to you.

How can I apply my knowledge to the Business and Enterprise Kete?
I will be able to make sure that all of my partners will be positive about what they are doing.
I can show this by making sure that everyone is happy with how there work is going and what they're doing.
