Photocopy Compositions 3.1/3.2

 Photocopy Compositions 3.1/3.2

Framing References:

Framing in photography is when parts of a photo are blocked to bring focus to the subject of the image. Framing is a key element in photography and is used to draw the eye to the focus. Framing can be used in either the center or along the sides of an image. Framing can be all 4 sides or just one or two sides. Often objects such as brunches, tunnels archways, windows, or people are used to create frames in an image. Frames can exist naturally within a location or either be staged to create framing. In my photocopy compositions, I have used negative film strips and also plastic straws to create different frames in my copies. I also played around with using framing all around and in certain areas.

I collected a range of different objects that have different textures, shapes, and patterns. I collected different forms of flowers and leaves, straws, stones/rocks, old photo negatives, rubber bands, scrunched-up paper, and more. These collections allowed me to play around with different compositions that have different textures and shapes. Even when using the same objects, alining them differently created many different unique shapes and compositions. I also played around with having a different background covering the objects. This really played a role in creating the unique colors. For example, when I had a white background the colors were lighter and less vibrant whereas when I placed a dark background on top it made the objects more vibrant and easier to see. I wanted to try to get an in-between on the two backgrounds so I scrunched up a piece of paper and laid it on top which helped to create a grey tone background. I was trying to create compositions that could fit my theme (changes throughout the years) but also create unique compositions that worked well together. My next steps with scanning will be to look deeper into how I could create more compositions that would fit my theme well. Here are my results (all my scans are on the google slide shown below).

Editing my images to relate to my theme:
For some of my photocopies, I decided to do half color and half black and white. I wanted to do this as in the olden days color photos, or television wasn't around whereas now we have color in everything. I thought this would help to relate to the changes throughout the years. It shows how times have changed especially through the idea of color.
One of my artist models Rinko Kawauchi uses the idea of light vs dark to show the idea of life vs death. I want imagination in the photographs I take. It’s like a prologue. You wonder, “What’s going on?” You feel something is going to happen”. “The subject of Rinko Kawauchi’s work “Aila” (which means “family” in Turkish) is the depiction of the essence of life: animals, plants, and people are shown in a sequence assembled by free association, which also includes both birth and death. Rinko Kawauchi’s fascination with fleeting beauty, the subjects of creation and destruction, and life and death are communicated in her images”. To create this idea in my image I have used a combination of underexposure and over-exposure to show the light vs dark idea. I have also edited my photocopies to have a bleach type, color effect like in her own photographs.

Art Week 3 Term 2

 Art Week 3 Term 2

Lesson one:

I was not at school on Monday so I will complete this task over the weekend.

Lesson two:

Based on one of my artist models Man Ray, I googled how he creates his techniques in his images. I found a video based on these techniques which will help me with creating my images using his techniques.

Lesson three:

I have found 2 more artist models to help with inspiration for my panel 2. The artists I have picked are Tina Modotti and Polina Pakhomova.

I have also been working on linking the top of my board one to the bottom of my board one. I was inspired by Rinko Kawuachi who uses a bleach/duotone edit to them. To do this I used photopea and create layers of gradients to create these different effects of color on top of my images.

Art Week 11

 Art Week 11 Term 1

Monday:

On Monday I was working on annotating my proof sheet from one of my photoshoots. I used the comments on google drive to create these annotations.

During the week I also worked on editing images that I had taken. I also updated everything that I needed to from term 1.

I split the image into 3 sections. One represents the 1940s, the middle represents the 80s and the last represents the 2020s. I used contrast and colors to edit the images into the different themes. I don't really like how the editing turned out. I don't like the harsh lines that separate each section, I will work on blending the colors so it flows nicely.

Art Week 10

 Art Week 10

Monday:

On Monday using my series and sequences one which is placed at the top of my folio plan, I used a basic level edit to edit my images and then placed them back onto my folio plan.

Tuesday:

On Tuesday, using my first artist model Fiona Pardington I looked at the way she edits her images and applied that effect to my editing. I find that a lot of her work has a very dark contrasted background compared to her focal points. Her focal points are normally very light and have very light colors.

To create this effect on my image I played around with the different curves and also selective colors on photopea. Selective colors allowed me to edit the main focus of the image to be lighter and not as vibrant which is what Fiona Pardington does in the artwork above.

Dark background, the main focal points are very light and have warm tones

Applying the dark background and warmer, lighter focal point to my edit

Over the Weekend:

During the weekend I took out my camera and decided to recreate Sally Mann's photograph that is on my mood board.

My Recreation

I liked how my recreation turned out, although the background isn't the same, I think it turned out well. I also think my image is a little bit more over-exposed and would look better with darker shadows and more contrast.

Also taking inspiration from Sally Mann, I also decided to create an image showing the changes throughout the years. For example, my model was dressed to relate to the vintage days (1940s), then she was dressed to look like the 80s using bright, bold colors and finally she was dressed to relate to nowadays (2020) which I think worked together really well. I took 3 different images and edited them together to make them look as if it was 1 image.

Art Blog 5 (Annotated Sketches)

 Art Blogpost 5

My theme for art this year is changes throughout the years. My artist models are Fiona Pardington, Man Ray, Jasmine Togo-Brisby and I also wanted to use Sally Man.

Fiona Pardington

Jasmine Togo-Brisby

Man Ray

Sally Mann

I created annotated sketches of all of these images using different points such as focal point, leading lines/framing devices, use of color, use of repetitive elements, space, and balance.

Man Ray
The face is the main focal point, the face is used as repetition which guides
the eye and emphasizes the focal point, grey tones are used, the image has dark greys
and light greys which create contrast.

Sally Mann
The girl is the focal point, the washing line creates a leading line toward the girl
emphasizing that she is the focal point, the background is very dark against the washing of the girl's clothing which creates contrast.

Jasmine Togo-Brisby
The background is a dark color, the circle is a white tone and the focal point is a silhouette which creates contrast, the framing of the circle helps draw the eye to the main focal point, the circle has a repetitive pattern throughout the background.

Fiona Pardington
Leading lines are used at the top of the image where the bird falls which leads your eye directly to the focal point which sits underneath the falling bird, the background is very dark whereas the focal point uses light, warm tones which creates a nice contrast and balance of colors, space and balance helps to create equal visite weight or equalizes the focal points.

Art Week 9

 Art Week 9

This week I have been working on planning my first folio board. My theme for art this year is changes throughout the years so I've taken inspiration from my artist models to create plans for my board.

My 3 artist models are Fiona Pardington, Jasmine Togo-Brisby, Sally Mann, and Man Ray.

So far I have planned my series and sequences to fit on my board like this, but as I photograph more photos for my board I may change this to fit better with my other images.

I have used my artist models to make plans for what I want to be on my board. I think these photographs from my artist models will work really well with inspiration for my theme. For my bottom image plan, I have taken inspiration from Sally Man's “Untitled, At Twelve Series (Jenny and the Bedspread) 1984”. I think the idea of having a person relating back to the olden days, the 80s, and modern while doing the washing will show the changes throughout the years really well.

Over the weekend I'm planning on taking the images of my plan so that I can place them on my folio plan to see how they look and what I need to change.
