Series and Sequence Folio Layout Activity

Series and Sequence Folio Layout Activity

I was given two different folio boards. Documentary and cultural. I was to rearrange these photos for each board into different series and sequences that I thought would work well together.

For the cultural one, I did two different ones. I picked out images that I thought went well together and placed them into groups. I then decided on what I thought would work well for the start of the board and then the bottom. I ended the board with the girl dancing as I liked that the board ended with motion. The only images of movement are of her dancing which I thought would be nice to end on.

For the documentary one, I decided to start the board off with Maori carvings and then the Marae. As I looked at the images I noticed that the documentary was based on a funeral. I decided the place the images the way a funeral would normally lay out. You arrive, tell stories and memories and then you say goodbye. This is why I ended the board with the burial and family/friends hugging and saying their goodbyes.

These are the results of the activity.

Blue & Golden Hour Photography

 Blue & Golden Hour Photography

Blue hour photography is when the sun is just below the horizon line. A short period before or after sunrise and sunset. It's called blue hour as the indirect sunlight is evenly distributed creating a blue tone to the image. Blue hour usually lasts an hour but may vary depending on when and where the photograph is being shot.

Golden hour is when the sun is low on the horizon. Right before sunrise or sunset. It creates a perfect light in your photograph. It creates a nice warm tone and glows in your image. This is used to create nostalgia and happiness within your images.

Daguerreotype Photos

Daguerreotype Photos

Daguerreotype photos were the first original form of photo available to the public and were popularly used around the 1840s and the 1850s.

Daguerreotype images are very scratchy and are darker (usually black and white or with brown tones).

To create my daguerreotype images, I opened my original image in photopea and edit my images to be black and white. I also edited my images to have less of a contrast to them using levels and a gradient map. I also then placed different overlays and effects on my images. I used two different dust and scratch overlays and also a dusty/old paper overlay. This helped to create the effect of a Daguerreotype.

I decided to use these images as I thought they would be fitting for this effect. My theme is changes throughout the years focusing on the 1940s, 1980s, and 2020s. I used these images as they are a part of my "olden day" area and thought they would fit this effect more. I also thought this effect would help show that they are meant to be my older images.

I really liked how these images turned out and I think they would be a good fit for on my board.

Art Week 5

 Art Week 5

For panel one, I still need more images to collect for my board. Over time I have been collecting images although some images don't fit on my board as well as I wanted. I have made a plan on paper of what images I still want to collect and I also started planning images for what I will have for boards 2 and 3. I also started planning on how I could connect these images to each board and how I will create them to work together well with my theme of changes throughout the years

Lesson 2: I watched a video on double exposure and learned how I can create a double exposure in my images. I think this is something I still need to work on as I don't think I executed the final result correctly. Trying to get the edges smooth and not too sharp is something I struggled with the most. Especially in my images, as there is different lighting and contrast in my images which made it difficult to select all the outside space in my image.

Lesson 3:

My Kaupapa is changes throughout the years.

What is working well? Linking my photographs back to my artist models is working well and executing their style.

What needs to be developed for my panel 1?

Learning to link my photographs together better rather than having them look like random series on my board.

Any artists or techniques I could use?

Using the black and white technique would be good for my theme. Contrasts and using different lighting to show my theme better.

Lesson 4:

My annotations on my new contact sheet:

Images I plan on editing next week which could work for my boards:

3.1/3.2 First Photoshoot Updated

 3.1/3.2 First Photoshoot Updated

For art level 3 I want my theme to be based on past vs present, changes throughout the years, or growing old. I want to do one of these themes as I enjoy seeing the difference in time and I find it fascinating. So for my first photoshoot, I decided to take some photos I have of flowers at my house. I took photos of flower buds, blooming flowers, and dead flowers. I thought this would work with one of the themes as it relates to changes and differences.

When I originally did my first photoshoot I hadn't fully finished collecting all the images I needed. I was also struggling to relate my photographs back to my theme. Now my theme is changes throughout the years focusing mainly on the difference between the 1940s, 1980s, and 2020. As I wasn't fully set on that idea when I first created a few of these images they don't fit as well with this theme. Some techniques were also just a little tricky to execute correctly with my theme.

These are my checklist for my images.

For my different shutter speeds I set my camera to TV setting which allowed for me to change my shutter but my camera changes the aperature. For my motion still I had a shutter of around 1/2000 and for my motion blur I had a small shutter of around 1/5. It was interesting to see how the shutter changed the motion of the image and the different effect it could create. I personally prefer the crisp lines of the motion still but creating motion blur images would still have a nice effect depending on whats being created.

Narrow Depth Of Field

Long Depth Of Field

Depths of Field. Narrow depth of field allows for more of a focus in an image. The narrow depth of field really draws your eye to what you want to be focused whereas the long depth of field allows for more subjects in your image. Ill be taking this into consideration when I create more images.

Angles

Angles

I like how different angles can create different meanings. The closer the angle is the more detail you can see but when the angle is moved out more it tells a bigger story. Similar to when angles are from a higher perspective it can make the subject look less powerful but when an angle is lower it gives the subject more power. Angles at an eye level can help show the subject as how we would see it in real life.

Leading Lines

Leading Lines

I really like how leading lines can draw you to the main subject. For my leading lines, I wanted them to directly be in front of Chloe and lead your eyes to her. I decided to use and fence and the edge of the back of a ute to execute these. Leading lines can help lead you through the journey of a photograph. Allows your eyes to flow with an image.

Directional Light

Directional Light

I really liked the effect that the different light has on each image. Depending on where the light source is comign from creates a different effect on the subject. I really liked when the angle of the light source came from one of the sides rather than the top or bottom. It gave a more flattering effect.

Lens Flare (Edited in)

Lens Flares. I noticed when the image had a natural lens flare that it created less contrast in the image. It make the image look more over exposed although I do really like the way the images turned out with lens flares. When editing the lens flare in it allowed for the contrast in the image to stay. The natural lens flares give a ghostly effect to the image which I find interesting. I really like that the lens flares give a sense of realism to my photographs.

For my framing my purpose was to highlight a main focal point. For example in my first frame image I have used old film stripes to frame around Chloe on the phone. I also used a wrapping paper tube to create the frame around the flower. I really like the effect that the wrapping paper tube has although it creates a lot of negative space in my image.

Rules of Third (with grid)

Rules of Third (without grid)

When I was creating my rules of third images my main point was to help show a story. For example I sat Chloe on the left side of the bed with the laptop infront of her. It allowed for me to create a better compostion in my image and to emphasis Chloe and the laptop. Similar to what I did with Chloe on the phone.

Contrast

Contrast

When creating contrast I decided to take the to opposites on the colour wheel. For example yellow is the opposite of blue. So i found a yellow flower and held it towards the blue sky. This allows for the flower to pop and creates texture to the image.

Scale

Scale

I found scale interesting to execute. It was difficult for me to make things that were smaller in real life and make them look bigger and more life size. Scale can increase the sense of three dimestional space in an image which can have a big effect on what you want your story to tell. For my scale I tried to make my water bottle as if it was the same size as a person. I placed the water bottle on a higher surface and got my person to walk back until they looked similar heights and sizes. For the car I tried to make it look as if it was on a road and I zoomed into the car so it looks bigger.

Triptych 1

Triptych 2

Triptych 3

I wasn't entirely sure how to create Triptych in my images so I put my camera on a tripod and took 3 different photos in the exact same place while Chloe did different poses while using the phone. I really like how these images turned out and I think they could possibly be good for my board.

Portraiture (Extreme Close Up)

I found it interesting how different portraits had different effects on what was going on in the image. Portraits can help capture personality, identity, features, and emotions. Also, different poses and postions play a big part in the effect of capturing the emotions and personality in an image.
