Chromatography

Aim:
To separate the different pigments in inks or dyes using paper chromatography.

Equipment:

• Ink from maker pens/food colouring/ ballpoint pens
• 250mL Beaker
• A strip of filter paper
• scissors
• pencil
• water

Method

Cut your filter paper into a strip like this

Put your thumb at the end of the filter paper and draw a line like this

Then add 2 dots using colored makers like this

Fill your beaker up with water but only add a little bit

Place your filter paper into the beaker like this and fold the excess paper over the beaker

Wait for it to rise and should turn out like this.
