Aim: I want to observe convection in a liquid.
Equipment:
- 200ml beaker
- water
- tweezers
- a crystal of potassium permanganate
- drinking straw
- Bunsen burner
- heat mat
- tripod
- gauze mat
Method:
- Set up a Bunsen burner, heat mat, gauze mat
- Fill 200ml beaker with 150ml cold water
- Place the beaker on top of the tripod and gauze and allow to settle for a few minutes
- Place your thumb on the end of the drinking straw then insert the drinking straw down one side of the beaker
- Using tweezers, drop a crystal of potassium permanganate down the strew and wait for the crystal to settle in the bottom of the beaker
- Very gently lift the straw out of the water
- Light the Bunsen Burner and slide it under the tripod so that you are the only heating one side of the beaker
Results/Observations:
The colour was purple and it was at the bottom.
When it was heated, it travelled up to the top of the water.
The colour then circled around.
