Discovery (Making a volcano)

Volcanoes

Aim: In passion project 2018 I joined the group discovery. I want to find out how to make a volcano and what causes a volcano to erupt.

What have I been working on? I have been working on building a paper mache volcano. I decided to build a volcano because I thought it would be interesting to learn and to build.

Method on building the volcano:
  1. Get a cardboard base.
  2. Place a plastic bottle (lid off) in the middle of the base (tape the bottle down).
  3. Add balls of newspaper around the bottle to make a volcano shape.
  4. Mix 1 part water and 1 part glue to make your paper mache solution.
  5. Once the paper balls are down, paper mache the balls to make a smoother coverage (don't paper mache the top, you want the lid to be able to screw on)
  6. Layer the paper mache up to make sure its sturdy.
  7. Once dried and hardened you can start painting the volcano.
  8. Paint the lid and drill a small hole in the middle of the lid.
  9. Screw the lid back on the volcano.
Method on making the volcano erupt:
  1. In a beaker measure out 35ml of hydrogen peroxide (this will depend on the size of your bottle, ours was 500ml)
  2. Tip the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle and add a squirt of dish soap (add food dye if you want to change the colour)
  3. In another beaker measure out 30ml of potassium permanganate.
  4. When you tip the potassium into the bottle, step back and watch the eruption.
What have I enjoyed about Discovery?
Being able to try something I have never tried before and because it was really fun.

Passion Projects 2018 (Discovery)

Logbook!

12/11/2018 Monday Day 1

Aim: I want to come up with ideas of what to make in my passion project.

What have I completed: Today I found some ideas on what I wanted to make.
I asked lots of people on their different ideas and came up with my own.
I have found my idea of making a volcano. I also found out all the equipment I needed.
My challenges today we're talking to lots of different people because it was awkward and I got nervous.
Next time I will start on my plan.

15/11/2018 Thursday Day 2

Aim: I want to research and find different ways to erupt a volcano.

What have I completed: Today I completed my entire plan on what I will be making.
I have found all the equipment I need and have made the method of making a volcano.
I choose to make a volcano because I found it really interesting and I thought it would be fun to make it
erupt. My challenges today we're finding out how much product I was going to need.
Another challenge was that my group kept finishing earlier then we needed.
Next time I will start building my project.

19/11/2018 Monday Day 3

Aim: Today I want to start making the volcano.
I want to start the base of the volcano and attach the bottle to the base.
We would also like to start shaping it.

What have I completed: Today we completed the structure of our volcano and paper mache it.
We started working out our ratio for the elephant toothpaste and came up with a good one.
20ml Potassium Permanganate, 25ml hydrogen peroxide and a squirt dish soap.
We did fail a couple of times while working on the elephant toothpaste but solved what had happened.
One of the times we have the wrong potassium permanganate.
We have 0.02 potassium permanganate instead of 0.2.
Next time we will start painting our volcano and then we will be ready to erupt it.

22/11/2018 Thursday Day 4

Aim: Today I want to start painting the volcano and try to finish the painting.
If we finish painting then we might add some details to it to make it look more realistic.

What have I completed: Today we completed the painting and adding details to our volcano.
We also got to do one more elephant toothpaste experiment and it worked really well!
We struggled with the painting because we couldn’t get the right brown and we kept making less paint then we needed so it looked a bit funky. We finally came up with the right brown and looks a lot better
then it did. We printed out some photos of dinosaurs and stuck them to our volcano.
Next time we want to start researching more information on why volcanoes erupt and what makes
them erupt and start getting our cardboard presentation ready.

26/11/18 Monday Day 5

Aim: Today I want to research on why volcanoes erupt and make a poster on the information we have
found out about volcanoes.

What have I completed: Today I completed the writing for the poster our group is making.
We come up with lots of group ideas and laid them out into a style that we liked.
I think we struggled with finding the information to the ideas but once we did it worked out really well.
Next time we are hoping to read over what we have written and fix any mistakes and then start
setting out the layout on some cardboard.

29/11/18 Thursday Day 6

Aim: Today I want to finish writing out our presentation and print it off.
I want to put it all together so that my group is already by monday next week.

What have I completed? Today I completed the rest of the presentation and did some chores for the
teachers because everything my group had is now finished. Also finished my science test and
now we are ready for next week. This project has been fun to make and I would do it again.

I wonder... (12)

I wonder why the only male in the world to have babies is a seahorse?

This is because...
The female seahorse plants their eggs inside the male's pouch. The males pouch can regulate temperature, blood flow, and water salinity for the eggs as they hatch so the babies are prepared for life living in the ocean. The females don't have a pouch so therefore its impossible for them to carry the babies.
There are also different males that carry the babies such as the pipefish and the leafy seadragon.

I wonder... (11)

I wonder...
What is the meaning of life?
Well, I think the meaning of life is to live but since we can't live we have kids so they can carry our generation on and experience what its like to be alive.

There is no real answer to the meaning of life its just what you believe.
