Chromatography

Aim:
To separate the different pigments in inks or dyes using paper chromatography.

Equipment:

  • Ink from maker pens/food colouring/ ballpoint pens
  • 250mL Beaker
  • A strip of filter paper
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • water
Method

Cut your filter paper into a strip like this

Put your thumb at the end of the filter paper and draw a line like this

Then add 2 dots using colored makers like this

Fill your beaker up with water but only add a little bit

Place your filter paper into the beaker like this and fold the excess paper over the beaker

Wait for it to rise and should turn out like this.

Growing Crystals

Aim:
I want to find out to make crystals form in a super-saturated solution.

Equipment:

  • A super-saturated solution of Sodium Acetate
  • A seed crystal of Sodium Acetate
  • Bunsen burner
  • Heat Mat
  • Boiling tube
  • Scissor Tongs
  • Funnel
  • Filter paper
  • A small beaker
Method:

  1. Get all your equipment ready.
  2. Put safety glasses on.
  3. Place the filter paper into the funnel, and place the funnel in the beaker
  4. Pour

Some Crystals that were stuck to the filter paper

Separating Mixtures

Aim:
To separate a solution from a precipitate (a precipitate is a solid that forms a liquid)

Equipment:

  • Lead Nitrate
  • Potassium Iodide
  • Conical Flask
  • Striing Rod
  • 250mL Beaker
  • Funnel
  • Filter Paper
Method:

  1. Put Safety Glasses on.
  2. Pour 10mL of Potassium Iodide and 10mL of Lead Nitrate into a 250mL beaker
  3. Fold a piece of filter paper in half 2 times and open it up on one of the sides to make it into a cone shape.
  4. Place the cone filter paper into a funnel and pour the liquid through the funnel into another beaker.

Solutions

Aim:
To investigate the solubility of Calcium Chloride and Magnesium Oxide.

Equipment:
  • Spatula
  • A stirring rod
  • Beaker
  • Measuring cylinder
  • Calcium Chloride
  • Magnesium Oxide
Method

  1. Fill the beaker with 100mL of tap water
  2. Add a spatula scoops of the Calcium Chloride
  3. Stir the solution until all of the Calcium Chloride has dissolved
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until no more of the Calcium Chloride will dissolve
  5. Record how many spatula scoops of Calcium Chloride were added
  6. Repeat experiment with the Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium Oxide = 5 spatula scoops
Calcium Chloride = 7 spatula scoops

Calcium Oxide

Making A Dilution Series

Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate concentration

Equipment:

  • A potassium permanganate crystal
  • Test tube rack
  • 10mL measuring cylinder
  • Test tubes
  • Safety glasses
  • Dropper
Method

  1. Put your safety glasses on.
  2. Place the six tubes in the test tube rack.
  3. Using the measuring cylinder, fill one test tube with 10mL of water the rest with 5mL of water.
  4. Add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to the test tube with 10mL of water.
  5. Using your dropper take 5mL of water from the 10mL water and add to the second test tube.
  6. Make sure that you rinse your dropper everytime you move 5mL of water.
  7. Repeat step 5 with all your test tubes until you have the same result as the photos.

The UK Influence On New Zealand

I'm in the UK group and I have been working on the foods.

I have learnt that the UK is a lot like New Zealand and that NZ has a lot of things from the UK.

I have enjoyed learning the different traditional foods from the different areas of the UK.
This is the link to the slide.

Musical Drama

Musical Drama

Our small group performance is going to be Mamma Mia Dancing Queen.

We have rehearsed about 30 sec to1 minute of our dance/acting so far and the whole performance is 4 minutes long.

These will be our characters.
Chloe-Tanya
Alayna-Rosie
Stevie-Donna

I think we need to improve the timing on the dance moves.

Bouncy Ball Experiement

Aim: I want to investigate how high a ball will bounce when it has been dropped from different heights.

Hypothesis: I predict that when the ball is bounced it will bounce lower then the height it was dropped from.

Method:
The equipment I need:

  • Golf Ball
  • Ruler
  • Stand with boss head and clamp
1. Attach the clamp to the stand
2. Attach the ruler onto the stand (make sure the zero mark is on the ground)
3. Hold the ball and drop it from the 100cm mark
4. Film the process to make sure you know where it bounces too
5. Repeat the experiment twice and record the measurements
6. Repeat the experiment using different heights

Variables:

Independent Variable: The height from where the ball drops.

Dependent Variable: The height of where the ball bounces too.

Controlled Variable: The surface the ball bounces on, the type of ball, the ruler.

Results:
Height Of Ball Dropped
100cm = 84cm
70cm = 60.5cm
50cm = 44cm
20cm = 16.5cm
0cm = 0cm
